Eeek! I’m so excited to be writing this post! Richard Bailey, PR Practitioner and Editor of online PR magazine, Behind the Spin, started up a series of #bestPRblogs and each week he would highlight a selection of PR student blog posts that stood out to him and feature them on Behind the Spin. At the beginning of April, myself and 4 other PR students in Britan were shortlisted and had April to impress Stephen Waddington, past President of the CIPR. This morning, I was announced as the winner and I could not be more chuffed!

PR Interview #8: David Wilkes (aka, my dad!)

As you may know, the reason I started studying PR was because my Dad knew about the industry and reckoned I’d be good at it. Obviously, as a 17 year old who didn’t enjoy being told what I was and wasn’t good at, I was like ‘yeahhh yeah sure dad I’ll look into it….’, but when I actually did look into it, turns out he was right and skip forward a couple of years and here I am! So I’ve decided to have a twist for this interview and not chat to a PR Professional, but a Marketing Professional and someone I think is very wise (but then again, I’m probably biased).

do you need a degree to work in PR?

The 2011 PRWeek/PRCA Census results showed that 89% of PR professionals have a degree. But, with the recent increase of student fees, not everyone wants/is able to spend 3+ years in education studying PR, which they could potentially work their way up in. So, is it possible to have just as good a career as someone who has a PR degree?
